Sauer Group began in 1876 when William N. Sauer launched a plumbing business in Pittsburgh with a $50 gift from his mother. In 1906, he partnered with John G. Steitz, expanding into heating and large-scale construction projects. The company evolved over the decades, offering a full range of mechanical and general construction services. We are now independently known as Sauer Group, with a focused presence in Central Ohio and surrounding states. Today, Sauer Group is committed to delivering exceptional service and value to our clients through dedication, expertise, and a strong local focus.

Prefab First, Schedule Safe
From preconstruction to startup, owners bring us in early to de-risk scope and protect schedule. We pair design assist and BIM coordination with local prefabrication, so critical assemblies start sooner, field hours drop, and turnover is predictable. Union crews, rigorous QA/QC, and a safety-first mindset carry the work from planning through startup and into service.
Our Story Timeline.
1876
The Beginning:
William N. Sauer was born in old Allegheny (now Pittsburgh's North Side) in 1858. On his 18th birthday in 1876, Bill received a $50 gift from his mother and used this money to start a small plumbing business during America's post-Civil War industrial growth period.
1906
Strategic Partnership:
Bill Sauer met John G. Steitz, a young pump salesman from New York. These two men joined forces and began to specialize in large construction work, leading Sauer Company into the heating field as well.
1943
Incorporation & Growth:
Sauer incorporated in 1943 and expanded to provide services in general construction, mechanical construction, and specialized trades including process piping, controls & instrumentation, HVAC services, equipment erection & rigging, plumbing, and metal fabrication.
2009
Strategic Reorganization:
Sauer Group reorganized its business structure to meet changing market dynamics, enhance customer focus, and position for future growth under Sauer Holdings.

Now operating independently as Sauer Group, we maintain our legacy of excellence while focusing specifically on Central Ohio with our specialized capabilities in HVAC, piping, prefabrication, structural steel, and control systems.
