Ohio State University Med Gas Vacuum Upgrade - Cancer and Critical Care Tower
Project Overview
Sauer Group was hired in a Joint Venture with another Mechanical Contractor to provide a Design Build upgrade to the medical vacuum system in the new Cancer and Critical Care Tower at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
This project was undertaken to expand the capacity of the vacuum system in order to increase capacity for the growing healthcare facility. The critical nature of this project required exceptional coordination and planning, as all work was performed while the hospital remained in full operation.

The Challenge
- Zero Downtime Requirement
The upgrade had to be completed with absolutely no interruptions to patient care and services. This meant working around active medical operations, coordinating with hospital staff, and implementing fail-safe procedures to ensure continuous vacuum service. - System Integration
Connecting new medical vacuum infrastructure to existing systems while maintaining code compliance and operational integrity throughout the facility. - State-Administered Project
Working within the constraints of a State of Ohio administered Design Build Project with Guaranteed Maximum Price requirements, ensuring full compliance with state regulations and documentation standards.
Scope of Work
The comprehensive medical gas upgrade included:
- New medical vacuum risers throughout the tower
- Medical vacuum branch lines to serve expanded areas
- Area alarm systems for monitoring and safety
- Connections to zone valve boxes for system control
- Integration with existing hospital infrastructure
- Testing and commissioning of all systems
